Maintenance Training Rig (MTR)

Realistic hands-on maintenance training on the simulator.
The REISER Maintenance Training Rig (MTR) provides a training environment for the practical instruction of mechanics and avionics personnel, and it can be qualified for B1 and B2 training courses in accordance with EASA Part 66. The 1:1 replica reproduces the shape, weight, center of gravity and relevant interfaces of all required parts of the original aircraft true to life. The functional cockpit, consisting of a fully equipped cockpit with functional true-to-original panels and controls, an Instructor Operating Station and re-engineered avionics software, provides extended training content, specifically for avionics personnel. With the MTR, the use of the original aircraft for training mechanics and avionics personnel can be reduced to a minimum. The 24/7 availability of the MTR reduces dependence on original equipment and increases both flexibility and capacity for maintenance training. The concept is platform-independent and can be implemented for any aircraft.

Overview

Hands-on training without the operational aircraft

Maintenance is not learned on a screen or in a classroom alone. Mechanics and avionics personnel have to remove and install components, make adjustments and test systems. Traditionally, this part of the training takes place on the original aircraft. The REISER Maintenance Training Rig reproduces the aircraft 1:1 and so makes hands-on training possible independently of the original aircraft. Training becomes available without tying up the operational fleet.

The challenge

Training on the real aircraft competes with operational use and with the availability of spare parts. Damage to original components can be expensive and repairs cost time. At the same time, maintenance and avionics teams have to train practical procedures regularly and under realistic conditions.

The MTR combines a high-fidelity 1:1 replica with durable, long-lasting components and a training scope matched to the platform. It enables hands-on training on mechanical, electrical, avionics and safety systems, in line with OEM maintenance instructions and with high availability for instruction.

From the rotor to the cabin: a Maintenance Training Rig has to be realistic where maintenance actually happens, at components, interfaces and work sequences. The four system areas show how the MTR supports practical instruction for mechanical, avionics and systems teams.

Structure & components

The MTR reproduces the mechanical structure, the doors and the maintenance access points of the respective aircraft true to life. The shape, weight and center of gravity of the training-relevant components are reproduced in the replicas in line with the original. This allows the removal and installation of components and adjustment work to be trained under realistic conditions.

Cockpit & avionics

The MTR can be extended with a fully functional simulation cockpit or with a Maintenance Avionic Trainer. Avionics pages, system states, fault patterns and functional checks from the cockpit can then be trained specifically for maintenance and avionics personnel.

Upgradeability & independence from OEM parts

Because the structure and the mechanical interfaces are built true to the original, the functional scope of the MTR can be adapted to upgrades and improvements of the original aircraft at any time. The MTR uses original standard parts only for mass consumable items and electrical connectors and otherwise works without original components. This makes it completely independent of original parts, for example in spare parts supply.

Fidelity & robustness

For training that is both realistic and frequent, replicas have to be true to the original and robust at the same time. REISER develops and manufactures the MTR components with intensive use in mind, while reproducing shape, weight and center of gravity as closely to the original as possible. Our own data acquisition makes implementation possible independently of the OEM.

Which maintenance work can be trained?

The MTR supports the removal and installation of components, mechanical adjustments, pre-flight checks, towing, role changes and systems familiarization, among other tasks. The exact coverage is matched to the platform and the training plan.

Can the MTR be extended for avionics training?

Yes. A Maintenance Avionic Trainer can be delivered as a stand-alone solution or integrated into the MTR. Possible content includes avionics familiarization, fault simulation, fault identification and rectification and functional checks.

Does REISER need complete OEM data?

Not always. REISER can build its own data basis, among other things through 3D scanning and manual data acquisition. Which data is needed and how it is captured depends on the aircraft, the training scope and the required level of detail.
