hoistAR®

Train hoist rescue without flying.
hoistAR® is a mobile augmented reality training system for hoist operators and complete helicopter crews, developed and manufactured by REISER Simulation and Training in Berg near Munich, Germany. A real rope and a real operating environment meet a virtual load and dynamic mission scenarios. Crews train realistically, safely and repeatably, independently of weather, time of day and the availability of a helicopter.

Overview

Train hoist rescue without flying

With hoistAR®, hoist operators and complete helicopter crews train realistic procedures in a safe, controlled environment. The real rope stays in the operator's hand while the virtual load responds to movements and corrections. When the system is connected to a Full Flight Simulator, the crew's flight maneuvers also act on the entire training system.

The challenge

Conventional hoist and rescue training depends on a real aircraft, on suitable weather and light conditions and on the availability of crew and infrastructure. High-risk emergency situations can only be trained to a limited extent in real flight, and repeated flight hours add fuel, maintenance and operating costs.

The solution

hoistAR® moves substantial parts of hoist and crew training into an immersive, virtual environment. Hoist operators handle the real rope and guide the virtual load while the crew trains procedures, communication and decisions together. Scenarios can be repeated, adapted and run without tying up the operational aircraft.

The system in detail

From the real rope to the virtual load: hoistAR® combines haptic interaction, augmented reality and, where required, the motion data of a Full Flight Simulator. The four system areas show how individual training stimuli become a shared crew experience.

1

AR visuals & virtual load

The virtual environment reproduces the load, the site of operation and the relevant scenarios. Hoist operators see the virtual load and influence its position through the real rope. The representation responds to movements and corrections and creates a direct interplay between real action and virtual reaction.

2

Real rope & hoist

Physical interaction remains a central part of the training. The real rope lets hoist operators practice gripping, guiding, positioning and correcting under genuinely haptic conditions. The training system therefore covers a work step that a purely virtual environment could not fully convey.

3

Mobile configuration

hoistAR® can be deployed and set up wherever the crew trains, in training centers, hangars or at suitable remote locations. The portable AR setup makes training independent of weather, daylight and the availability of a real helicopter.

4

FFS connection

When the system is coupled with a Full Flight Simulator, the pilots' flight maneuvers become part of the hoist training. Simulator motion acts on the overall system while the virtual load responds to the changed flight situation. Cockpit and hoist operator can therefore train their cooperation in a shared scenario.

FAQ

Typical questions about hoistAR®, from rope handling to FFS connection.

What is hoistAR®?

hoistAR® is a mobile augmented reality training system for hoist operators and helicopter crews. It combines a real rope with a virtual load and enables realistic training of hoist and rescue procedures.

Can hoist operators and pilots train together?

Yes. hoistAR® is designed for training hoist operators and complete helicopter crews. With an FFS connection, the pilots' flight maneuvers can be included in the shared scenario.

Can hoistAR® be used at different locations?

Yes. The portable AR setup can be used at suitable training locations, indoors and in hangars. Training is therefore not dependent on weather, daylight or the availability of a helicopter.

Which scenarios can be trained?

Depending on the configuration, hoist and rescue procedures, full-crew coordination and emergency scenarios can be trained. The specific selection of scenarios is adapted to the training objective, the operator and the system connection.

Does hoistAR® replace training in the Full Flight Simulator?

hoistAR® is a training solution in its own right and can additionally be connected to a Full Flight Simulator. Which parts of the training run on hoistAR® or in the FFS depends on the training plan and the intended training scope.
